Causal Organism

Tomato Leaf Curl Virus (begomovirus) — transmitted by whitefly (Bemisia tabaci)

Symptoms

Upward curling and cupping of leaves. Stunted growth. Yellowing of leaf margins. Severely infected plants produce few or no fruits.

Prevention

Use virus-resistant varieties (Arka Rakshak, Arka Samrat). Control whitefly population with reflective mulch and yellow sticky traps. Avoid planting near infected fields. Rogue out infected plants early.

Season Risk: Year-round; peak transmission during dry, hot seasons when whitefly populations explode

Treatment

No cure once infected — remove and destroy infected plants. Control vector whitefly with imidacloprid (0.5 ml/L) or thiamethoxam (0.2g/L). Alternate insecticides to manage resistance.

Frequently Asked Questions

How far can whitefly spread the virus?
A single viruliferous whitefly can infect plants 50–100m away. Wind-assisted spread means a field can be 90% infected within 3–4 weeks of initial outbreak.
