Causal Organism

Erysiphe spp. / Uncinula necator (grapes) / Podosphaera xanthii (cucurbits) — obligate fungal parasites

Symptoms

White powdery patches on upper leaf surface, shoots, and flowers. Affected tissue turns yellow and dies. In mango, new flush and flowers affected — reduces fruit set.

Prevention

Adequate plant spacing for air circulation. Avoid excess nitrogen fertilization. Use resistant varieties. Kaolin clay spray on mango creates a physical barrier.

Season Risk: Cool, dry weather (15–25°C); unlike most fungal diseases, does NOT require free water for sporulation

Treatment

Sulphur fungicides (wettable sulphur 0.3%) are very effective and economical. Tebuconazole or propiconazole for severe outbreaks. Potassium bicarbonate (4g/L) is organic option.

Frequently Asked Questions

Avoid sulphur sprays when temperature exceeds 32°C — phytotoxicity risk is high. Use systemic fungicides (triazoles) instead during hot weather.
