Causal Organism

Magnaporthe oryzae (Pyricularia oryzae) — fungus

Symptoms

Leaf blast: spindle-shaped lesions with grey centre and brown border. Neck blast (most damaging): infection at neck of panicle causes white empty panicles or partial filling.

Prevention

Grow blast-resistant varieties. Avoid excess nitrogen (promotes susceptibility). Maintain adequate but not excessive water. Avoid early morning sprinkler irrigation.

Season Risk: Kharif (July–September); high humidity + temperature fluctuations trigger outbreaks

Treatment

Apply tricyclazole (0.06%) at boot leaf stage as prophylactic spray. Carbendazim or isoprothiolane for curative treatment. Critical window: at panicle initiation for neck blast prevention.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I distinguish blast from brown spot?
Blast lesions have grey/white centre with brown margins and are spindle-shaped (boat-shaped). Brown spot lesions are oval-round with a yellow halo. Blast spreads faster and neck blast is much more damaging.
